Hillbrow Tower

a view of the Hillbrow tower against a crisp blue sky.
The tower has always been used for signal transmission, although
at one stage there was a restaurant and viewing platform
at the top.    Today it's use is purely for telecommunication.
Image taken opposite the Hillbrow post office.    To see previous

This is very well composed. I'm curious about the tower, though: what it its purpose? Is there a restaurant or viewing platform at the top?

Thanks for stopping by The Villages DP and for your very nice comment. That led me to your blog which is excellent - great photography...and I shall return!

The tower is big, and certainly more stylish than the steel antennae themselves. Years ago, I ate at the restaurant on top of the similar CN Tower in Toronto, and the view was nice. The shame is that you could probably see 100 or more miles in any direction if you could get into the tower. From the ground, it is so impressive. The views of SA that you present are great!

My first guess when I looked at the tower was that it is the minaret for a mosque, then I read your note. It must be quite large if it held a restaurant. Too bad it is closed as the view must be terrific.

What a lovely perspective looking up the tower. It really is a shame the restaurant is closed. As a child I got to eat in a restaurant at the top of the tallest building in Rochester, NY, not really that tall but impressive to a small child. As an adult I have eaten and viewed Atlanta form the top of the Peachtree Westin in the Sundial Restaurant. It is an amazing view and the transition from day to night is spectacular. ~ Calico Contemplations

It reaches into a clear blue sky! We have a similar-looking tower in Toronto...but it often reaches into SMOG! EW!

Hi Gena. Nice to hear from South Africa. I grow many plants from your homeland (I'm in Bermuda) including some Proteas. What a botanical wonderland you live in!

That tower is impressive. I would love to see the view from there.

Nice perspective on the cloudless sky with the tree silhouetted in the foreground.

Happy Sky Looking!
