Succlent Rose

To me the gorgeous Echevaria looks like another form of a rose. In fact I'm convinced

that some people refer to these succulents as "desert rose" but, I may be wrong ....

...the shape and almost delicate look about them ....

and not only do they remind me of a rose, I think they go well with roses too, even

through technically speaking they are on opposite ends of the plant spectrum ....

I was "playing" around, as I like to do... and put this collage together ..... now tell me

they don't look good together!?

In honour of a great pilgrimage

A couple of weekends ago I was out in Pretoria (capital city of South Africa) and
noticed the Voortrekker monument up on the hill .... I had not been there since
high school, which if truth be told, was a very, very long time ago .....

Camera in hand, off I went.

I spent a great afternoon there in the tranquil nature reserve type gardens
enjoying the scenery and the fascinating history and architechure.

This first image (above) is taken inside the actual monument (see image below) where

the late afternoon sun was shining through the latticed glass panels

in a vibrant golden hue, creating both reflections and shadows

onto the marbled floor.

This monumnet commemorates the pioneers who travelled from the

coastal areas inlands between 1835 and 1855 -

this trip was called "The Great Trek".

During this time approximately 15,000 pioneers moved inlands to establish the

provinces of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, effectively the start of

South Africa as it was to become.

Melon Rouge

Autumn and Spring have the most marked changes in terms of lighting,

colours, details (in my mind anyway), so it's a time when I start

pondering all the wonderful places to visit in order to capture

the great detail that nature provides.

In my planning I was thinking to spend a day over in Magaliesburg (about
an hour out of Johannesburg) visiting some of the wonderful places there,
and it reminded me of the review I did on Melon Rouge entitled

"Kick off Your Shoes" last May - link here.
And that ... brought me to post a collection of images from
that outing ..... enjoy!!!

Azulejo: Mosaic Monday

a mosaic made from images of blue and white (predominantly) tiles and mosaics, taken in and around Lisbon.
The title Azulejo (taken from the word Azul = blue) refers to the art/ tilework which goes back many
centuries - here is a link if you are interested in more information on this work.

Azulejo is such an intrinsic part of Portuguese architecture that there is a museum in Lisbon dedicated
to it - here is the link

Mosaic Monday: Contrasts

a collage of contrasts

Whilst in the country, I took pictures in this garden where both aloes, succulents, lavender, roses and other plants bloom. When I downloaded the pics, I was amazed at the stark contrasts of the aloes and the pink roses and funnily enough thought what a great combination they make, even though they are in total contrast in all respects, hence this collage/ mosaic!

Irene Dairy Estate: Mosaic Monday

this is a collage/ mosaic of images taken on an outing the the Irene Dairy Farm, just outside and north of Johannesburg.

It was an old family farm in years gone by and is still functioning today, but obviously in a more modern form, so the old building pictured here is no longer functioning, but preserved for historical reasons. This farm belongs to the original family, who still reside on the large property - a great piece of history.

It's a very pretty place to vist, there is a great country style restaurant to enjoy lunches or breakfasts at, and you can buy fresh milk to take home!

Mosaic Monday: Hope Road

a mosaic of pictures taken on part of "8 Hope Rd" in Houghton, Johannesburg. These are part of the old garden and one of the original (old) buildings. There are a number of homes and gorgeous gardens on this property, some of which are used for weddings and events. I hope to post a few more in the future.

Mosaic Monday: The Old Gate

These are some of the pictures taken whilst on a Heritage Walk some months ago. they depict the details of the very old gates and gate posts of what was the originally the Barney Barnato (mining magnate) property in Berea, Johannesburg. This property now holds a school on it's grounds, retaining part of the original buildings and garden layout.
